Sodium nitrite description
Sodium nitrite is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaNO2. It is a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder that dissolves easily in water and absorbs moisture from the air. In industries it is considered the most important nitrite salt. It is used as a base material for producing many organic compounds including medicines dyes and pesticides.
Usage
It is used as a basic raw material for azo dyes and pigments. It is used for the diazotization of amines. It works as an intermediate for many pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. It acts as an accelerator in phosphating which is an important process in metal treatment for the automobile industry. In heat treatment it is used in combination with sodium nitrite potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate. These combinations are used for quench hardening and tempering steel. It is also used as a heat transfer salt. It is used for producing dinitroso penta methylene tetra amine which is used in the manufacture of rubber based footwear.
